The International Bank of Azerbaijan is a universal backbone bank of the region. The Bank, offering a wide range of products and services, uses innovative banking technologies and constantly updates innovative solutions for customer satisfaction.

The International Bank of Azerbaijan continuously supports the development of the IT ecosystem in the country. The IBA Tech Academy, created by the Bank in 2019, has quickly become the unique platform for young programmers.

The IBA Tech Academy also provides support to the International Bank of Azerbaijan in organization of the IBA Regional Hackathon.

Cofounder and CTO of Readdle – a mobile app development company with over 130 million total downloads. Has over 16 years of experience of building high-load web and complex mobile and desktop applications. Still writes code. Professional interests include cloud computing, AR, machine learning, cryptography, networking and user interfaces.

Max Gurvits

US/European entrepreneur and angel investor. He was on the founding team of one of the biggest regional tech acceleration programs and funds (Eleven Startup Accelerator and EUR 12m seed fund) in Bulgaria. Director for CEE and MENA of Cross Border Angels, syndicating 1-2 monthly investments with over 70+ angels and investment firms. In 2020, Max has launched a new EUR 20m seed-stage venture capital fund for CEE.

Oleksandr Yatsenko

Managing Partner at BRISE Capital – private investment company, specialized on scouting and project development. Oleksandr is the Head of the Internet Advertising Committee of the Internet Association of Ukraine and an expert in the Ukrainian Startup Fund.

Olha Uzhykova

Design Director and Co-founder at Netrix. CEO and Co-founder at ITG.digital. Winner and judge at Awwwards contest – a professional web design and development competition held in the USA and Europe. Master of Engineering. Back-End Developer with a broad portfolio focused on high-load architecture development. Highly competent in microservices creation and personal data processing. Having participated in more than 10 European hackathons, have direct experience with 48-hour non-stop workloads which lead to deep understanding of the importance of a good mentor’s supervision.

Baku Expo Centre is a multipurpose events venue designed and constructed in accordance with highest international standards. The Expo Centre is located in close proximity to the airport and at just 20 min of drive distance from the city centre.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hackathon ?
Hackathon is an unorthodox way to solve different kinds of problems. It is a competition that gathers
programmers, professionals and entrepreneurs with different skill sets to work collaboratively, on an innovative project usually in a weekend.
What should I build ?
Participants should build a prototype or a pretotype in accordance with targeted areas of work. The prototype or pretotype should represent the idea and show how the idea can be implemented. It could be different kinds of solutions: websites, mobile apps, chatbots – the format is up to you. You will have 36 hours for project development. Projects will be presented to the judges in the pitching session.
Is there any participation fee ?
Participation in the hackathon is free of charge. The IBA is aiming to develop a culture of innovation and IT ecosystem of the country in general.With this view, the IBA Hackathon was organized.
How to participate ?
Please, register on our website. Then you will receive a registration form on your email – it needs to be filled out. After reviewing your application, the organizing committee will contact you to confirm your participation.
Do I need to have a team to participate ?
Not necessarily. You can register as a team or individually. In case you sign up on your own with no team, we will help you to settle in a team before or during the event.
Does each team member has to be registered ?
Yes, each team member has to register and indicate on the registration form the name of the team s/he belongs to. Teams will ideally consist of 2 to 5 participants.
What will I do there if I am not a techie ?
The IBA hackathon targets web programmers, data analysts, designers, communication experts, entrepreneurs, managers and other enthusiasts. You don't necessarily need to be a programmer to participate, however, someone within your team should have an IT background/knowledge.
What data and tools can I use ?
During the competition you will have access to the anonymized data and data sets provided by the Bank in order for you to develop your project. The data will be available after confirmation of your registration. You are free to use any tools, IDEs, etc you prefer. If you have any special requirements on software/hardware, please contact us.
What will you provide to the participants during the hackathon ?
Participants will be provided:
Comfortable conditions, food and drinks, Internet access, comfortable venue for 36 hours;
Help / consultation / feedback from mentors on developed projects or any technical issue;
Pleasant atmosphere and communication with other participants during the closing evening of the hackathon;
Winning teams will receive valuable prizes from the organizers of the Hackathon.
The hackathon will take place at Baku Expo Center, one of the best convention hubs in the country.
Do I have to be physically present at the hackathon ?
Yes, participants should be physically present throughout the whole competition. The agenda is designed in the way that it is possible to get the maximum by staying in the hackathon all the time. But if you will skip some parts – it is your decision, which can affect your project and your team.Space will be organized for your comfort work for 36 hours.
Which language will be used in hackathon ?
You can use languages that you are used to: Python, Java, PHP… :) In all seriousness, this is an international event. We are expecting participants from other countries, we will have an international team of mentors. So the main language of the hackathon is English. At the same time, during work, the teams will communicate with each other in any language convenient for them.
Will the Bank provide data for hackathon participants ?
Yes, Bank will share data via API. Data format will match the real Bank’s data models. All data provided for the purposes of the hackathon participants will be anonymized.
Who owns the right of the developed projects on the hackathon ?
Exploitation and property rights to prototypes developed during the Hackathon are reserved for Participants and IBA. IBA will have the liberty to use, develop, revise, edit, deploy, launch, market, sell, partly or wholly, ideas, projects or prototypes that are suggested, developed, pitched during the Hackathon. For doing that, IBA will not be indemnified or held liable whatsoever by participants or any party that claims ownership or rights to that idea, project or prototype.
How judges will evaluate projects ?
Projects will be evaluated by Hackathons’ judges. 12,5% of the assessment will depend on the votes of other teams. You can vote for any other team except yours.
Who are the mentors ?
Mentors are invited experts from various fields. They will support participants by providing professional expertise and advice where needed. In agenda we had planned mentors’ sessions, in addition you can schedule a consultation with a mentor.
Can the International Bank of Azerbaijan staff participate in the Hackathon?
No. To protect the principles of full objectivity, the employees of the International Bank of Azerbaijan and Azercard processing center, a subsidiary of the bank, are not allowed to participate in the Hackathon.
Are employees of other banks allowed to participate in the Hackathon?
Yes. Employees working in other banks may participate in the IBA Regional Hackathon by following the appropriate rules and conditions of the event.
Will the travel expenses for foreign participants be met?
The Organizing Committee of the IBA Regional Hackathon will provide maximum 10 international participants with travel and accommodation support. Support to each participant will not exceed the amount of AZN 1000. The Organizing Committee will consider diversity, regional differences and credentials in selecting the participants who would receive such support.Those who wish to be considered for travel support are required to email us at info@ibatech.az by indicating “Travel support request” in the email subject. Full name should be also in the email. Applications for travel support will not be considered after 20 February midnight Baku time. Travel support will be paid in cash during the hackathon.
